Garment Care – Helpful Hints & Tips on...

Suede & Leather

  • Suede & Leather garments are popular fashion items, they are expensive and more delicate than a lot of fabric garments. Cleaning requires a great deal of knowledge and expertise.
  • Suede & Leather should be enjoyed, what follows is information designed to tell the reader something about it, what to look for, how to look after it, what to do and what not to do, but don’t be put off from enjoying your purchase, we are leather specialists.
  • Each panel in a leather garment will have come from a different animal, for this reason colour variation can occur.
  • Hides are batch dyed before being made up into a garment helping to ensure uniformity of colour on the finished article.
  • When purchasing the garment of your choice it is important to check the items on the rail as each will vary slightly in colour and texture. Quality will vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer and just because it is more expensive than another similar item it does not follow that it is better.
  • Dry cleaning should only be carried out by experts and for this reason we at 123 Cleaners only use an outside specialist cleaning service that deals with quality garments.
  • Leather is pre-stretched in tanning, therefore some relaxation will take place in cleaning, but it should not be noticeable. Suede is always more difficult to clean than leather, therefore great care should be exercised by the wearer not to let the garment become too grubby before it is cleaned.
  • Because all suede & leather is dyed, when having an item cleaned some colour loss may occur, but it is normally possible to correct this. If it is part of a suit all items should be cleaned at the same time otherwise colour variation may occur between the items.
  • Some garments have glued seams and hems, the manufacturer should have tested that the glued item can be dry cleaned. However, suede particularly, because of its porous nature can allow glue to migrate through the skin in cleaning and could show as a dark line after cleaning. This is a manufacturing fault and the retailer should replace the item. Always make sure the garment has a care label and that it can be dry cleaned, never remove the label.
  • Lines in the skin, particularly in suede, occur naturally, and are not a fault.
  • Ball point ink is difficult to remove from skins because the skin dye can be weaker than the ink.
  • There is no guarantee that stains can be removed from skins, however the sooner the item is brought to us for treatment and cleaning, the better the chance of removal.
  • Heavy soiling can be difficult to remove, for this reason do not allow garments to become too grubby before having them cleaned.
  • Only the most gentle process is used to clean your suede & leather, if you follow this guide you will enjoy your purchase for many years.
  • We offer a complete tailoring and repair service on suede and leather garments.
