Stain Care

This article has many tips on how to care for your stained garments. It describes things you should and most importantly shouldn't do to a stain. It focuses mainly on dry cleaning garments and explains how dry cleaning can aid the treatment of a stain.

  • Moths love dirty clothes – This is a fact! They look for protein in stains which is where they lay their eggs. Never put clothes away dirty.
  • Because a stain disappears it has not gone. Sugars / Proteins are likely to remain and will develop into a stain over time.
  • For the above reason stains may “appear” after cleaning, due to the heat of the process.
  • Always clean all parts of an outfit together, otherwise colour variation may occur if cleaned separately.
  • Always point out a stain when getting your garments dry cleaned. If possible, identify what it is. This will help the person in charge decide how to best treat the stain.
  • Always blot a stain with absorbent white tissue, never rub at a stain, this can cause pile damage and colour loss from the fabric. It may not be noticeable until cleaned.
  • Never put salt on wine stains or white wine on red wine, and always bring the item to us as soon as possible so that we have the best chance of treating the stain.
  • Always clean winter or summer clothes before putting them away ready for the next season, remember, Moths Love Dirty Clothes!
  • Always allow wet or damp items to air and dry before putting them away, once mildew forms there is no way of removing it.
  • Clothes should be cleaned or washed regularly. Modern methods are not harmful to fabrics.
  • If there is no care label or it has been removed then the item will only be cleaned at owner’s risk.
  • Never iron a garment with a stain on it, the heat of the iron can set the stain in so that it may never be removed.
  • If suede becomes wet, allow to dry in a well ventilated area (on a hanger in the middle of a bedroom doorway will do) and then brush gently with a suede brush against the nap.
  • Bed linen, especially duvets, should be cleaned regularly, particularly when changing over from summer to winter and vice-versa. Dust mites living in mattresses, duvets and bed linen are amongst the biggest causes of breathing difficulties, especially for asthma and hay fever suffers.
  • Where a water spill occurs blot dry as far as possible, then with a hairdryer on warm setting rotate nozzle in a circular motion blowing inwards, the item will dry out without leaving a water mark.
  • Stain removal cannot be guaranteed. The longer a stain remains, the more difficult it is to remove.
